In order to register as a student at the Charité you need to prove that you are adequately insured. For German students, or those students who already have German health insurance, you simply need to bring a Bescheinigung für Hochschule from your provider. This document will be submitted along with your other Charité registration documents.
Health insurance requirements for international students vary depending on what country you are from. For more information please click on the link below which corresponds to your citizenship.

Non-European Union Foreign students have two choices:
Complicated Choice:
You may apply for a proof of exemption through your current insurance agency. Proof of exemption must be accompanied by the following documentation:
| 1) |
Verification by a German Insurance company in German. |
| 2) |
A “Bescheinigung für Hochschule” This is a statement from a German health insurance provider, in German, indicating that you are insured as a university student. |
Note: obtaining all the necessary documentation for this option can take several weeks. If you choose this option make sure you allot enough time.
Easy Choice:
By far the easiest option is to obtain German health insurance once you arrive in Germany. You may choose any German
Public Health Insurance company you wish. However, because the Humboldt University already has an agreement with a company called "Techniker
Krankenkasse". This option is extremely easy and inexpensive. Here is how it works:
Just before you register to be a student at the Charité our TK
representative comes to the Molecular Medicine offices with the necessary form. Once you fill in the form health insurance coverage is granted immediately, even before you pay the first monthly installment (about 65 Euros per month). Then have a couple of weeks to establish
a German bank account from which you pay your health insurance monthly fee.

If you consult
a doctor , your medical card (chip or smartcard) must be presented every time.
Generally speaking, a doctor's fee of € 10 is to be paid when consulting a dentist or a general practitioner for the first time in each three month period (quarter) of any year. General physicians and specialists can transfer patients to a specialist or other doctor. In this case, the fee need not be paid anew if consultation takes place in the same 3 month period.
If a doctor prescribes medication, 10% of the costs have to be paid by the patient: i.e. at least € 5 and up to € 10, up to the actual costs of the pharmaceuticals/medication, must be paid.
Every insured person is expected to pay some supplementary costs for medication and similar fees, up to the amount of 2% of annual income:
· the standard doctor's fee
· additional payment for medication
· additional payment for hospital stay.
If the 2% financial allowance is exceeded, the patient may apply for exemption from further costs to the health insurance company. For further information please contact your health insurance company.
Any student who has valid insurance cover can consult any doctor he or she chooses. Names and addresses of doctors
can be found through the internet or in the Yellow Pages (Gelbe Seiten) arranged according to their specialty.
