How to Apply - Frequently Asked Questions

Question One:
How many students apply to the program each year and how many are accepted?

Answer One:
This year we expect to receive about 200 applications and will accept between 20 and 25 students.

Question Two:
Can I still apply if I don't have my diploma yet?

Answer Two:
Yes, you can still apply. We only need your diploma when you actually enter the program in October.

Question Three:
How intensive is the program? Will I be able to work in a part-time job while I study?

Answer Three:
The program is extremely intensive. Generally you are in classes all morning, four day per week, and in your lab placement every afternoon during the week. You do have some free study time each week, but you will almost always need this time to study. It is possible to get a student job at the Charité in which you work for approximately 8 hours per week for €320 per month. These jobs are not easy to find, however, and you should not rely on finding one in order to support your education.

Question Four:
Do you offer any scholarships?

Answer Four:
At this time the Charité does not offer any scholarships to assist students in the master's program in molecular medicine. However, some of our current students have been successful in obtaining a scholarship for one semester from the Humboldt University with which the Charité is associated. Please click here for more information about this scholarship opportunity.

Many of our international students have also obtained financial assistance from the DAAD.

Question Five:
What is the minimum score I need to earn in order to demonstrate proficiency in English?

Answer Five:
Test Type Minimum Score Required

TOEFL, paper based 580
TOEFL, computer based 237
TOEFL, internet based 92

IELTS 6.5

Question Six:
Is it necessary to submit my application before I send letters of recommendation?

Answer Six:
No, you can submit all the necessary application materials in any order you wish.

Question Seven:
Is it necessary to send originals of all documents by the application deadline, or can I send copies first?

Answer Seven:
It is NOT necessary to send certified originals of all documents by the application deadline. You can send copies. However, if we accept you it is under the condition that before you begin the program in October, you provide the necessary originals.

Question Eight:
Do you have a numerus clausus (grade limit below which you do not accept students) for applicants?

Answer Eight:
No, we do not have a numerus clausus or average bachelor grade that we expect all applicants to have obtained in order to qualify for our program. Rather, we examine all the documents required for the application carefully and base our admissions decision on the whole person. Your grades are of course important, but students with relatively lower grades are still accepted to our program if the other aspects of their application are especially strong.

Question Nine:
Can I send my application documents via email?

Answer Nine:
Yes, you can send all your application documents via email. You can, for example, scan official transcripts and send them as picture files. Your referees can also send their letters of recommendation initially by email. We only need official hard copies of your application documents if you are accepted to the program.

Question Ten:
How can I check my eligibility for the program?

Answer Ten:
First please carefully read the information provided on the homepage: WHO SHOULD APPLY and HOW TO APPLY - SUITABILITY FOR THE PROGRAM If you are an international student and you feel that you could be eligible, fill out our pre-application form which is available from January 1 to April 1. You do not need to hand in any documents at this stage of the application process. Please do not send us any documents before your pre-application has been approved. If your pre-application is approved we will send you a second application form and ask you to send us all your application documents.

Question Eleven:
How does the module system work?

Answer Eleven:
For each module, all the lectures concentrate on a specific topic, for instance cancer, as in module one. By the end of the module "about 8 weeks", you take an exam, in addition to doing a presentation and handing in a report about your lab work. The cycle repeats itself for each module.

Question Twelve:
How many lab placements do we have over the master's course?

Answer Twelve:
You get two lab rotations, where you can choose for the most part which lab you want to work at. In addition, there is a computer lab course for the bioinformatics module. Afterwards, you will decide on a master's thesis, where you will be spending most of the time in the lab.
